As you continue going east in Los Angeles, you'll slowly come closer to the outskirts of the town, which are a lot less urban than the downtown areas. The Santa Monica Hills even feature the famous "Hollywood" sign. There are some residential areas here, but if you go further in you will enter an area of semi-arid land with low lying plants that lie on the hilly terrain here. You can't say it's very beautiful here since of course it's very desert-like, but if you can find a way to live off the area by catching desert hares and drinking from small pools of water here and there, you're set to go.
